The trip was planned by our Bonner Director and our Senior Intern. We helped out at a food bank called “Bread for the City” (http://www.breadforthecity.org/)- which was really awesome and we got to experience both of their sites, in Northwest DC and Anacostia. We packed up bags with food items as they passed them out to the people in the community. Check out their website above to find out more.
We stayed at a church and got to eat dinner with an organization involved with homelessness issues. It was awesome just hearing the stories of their lives. The next morning we visited the largest homeless shelter in the country and the world-”CCNV”. They gave us a tour of the shelter, and it is huge! It has a bed capcity of 1,350 for homeless men, women, and children. DC Central Kitchen even prepares the food for them. We were even fortunate enough to meet the Director - Mr. Terri Bishop. (http://users.erols.com/ccnv/_)- visit their site to learn more-it is just amazing to see what they do on a daily basis and how many people they help. Even though we did get lost a few times while driving around (since we are used to little ol’ Banner Elk, NC), it was just such an amazing experience. We learned so much and it was an awesome time-and we got to see the city. I highly reccomend that you try and work up a trip, even if it’s only a little weekend helping out-you will love it.

-Sheena Allen

Exciting Work on Hunger and Homelessness at Davidson College March 27-April 13

My alma mater, Davidson College, a stellar Bonner school, has put together a sweet two-week look at Hunger and Homelessness that involves many campus groups and community organizations working together. This project was a brainchild of the Networking Action Team back at the Congress Meeting at Dickinson College back in November 2005, and it's so exciting to see Bonners rallying together in such a busy month. We're encouraging you all to post here on the blog about what you're doing at your school. Here's what we got so far--please hit comment and add what's going on at your school! And special thanks to Neil Hartmann from The College of New Jersey who has worked very hard to help coordinate this effort.

Nick French from Allegheny College wrote:
Allegheny will be partnering with Waynesburg College for the National Bonner Day of Service on April 1st. We will be sending Bonners to the following sites:

Kids Café (entertaining children)

The Humane Society (cleaning and obedience)

Shelter Sheep Farm (manual labor)

Senior Center (cleaning and outdoor jobs)

Open Arms (entertaining consumers)

Salvation Army (warehouse)

We anticipate the participation of over 30 Bonners in this event (13 of which will be from Allegheny since our numbers are smaller). We are excited about the opportunity to serve our community with our fellow Bonners.

Charlotte Collins from Oberlin College wrote:
Oberlin will be participating in the day of service on the 22nd. We will be taking part in the heart project (started by an Oberlin Bonner Scholar). This project is very special to the Oberlin community. The Heart Project was started in 2004 by Brea Weil-Hearon who lost her mother in 1994 from a massive heart attack at the age of 45. Brea was only thirteen at the time of her mother's death. She is now a college graduate and is making it her life's ambition to help prevent other women from suffering a premature death from heart disease. The Heart Project provides much needed funds to the Women's Heart Foundation to help support its wellness, awareness and prevention programs. The Heart Project collects unwanted costume jewelry during the months of November through March. The jewelry is then cleaned and polished by service organizations and made available for resale at an event the first Saturday after tax day, call "Untax My Heart". The Heart Project was started with Brea's own mom's jewelry. She held the first event while enrolled at Oberlin College in Ohio. Brea's sorority sisters wanted to help raise funds for women's hearts too so they contributed their own' mothers' jewelry as well and assumed the role of cleaning and polishing it and setting up a sales event in Oberlin, combining the jewelry sales event with another college happening. This one jewelry sale event raised $4,000! Brea has relocated to Indiana and has accepted the position of Chair of the Heart Project for the Women's Heart Foundation. She is building a network of support for this event to be repeated at the Indiana University while the Bonner Scholars at Oberlin College will continue with The Heart Project as a campus service project. Brea is also working with Bonner Scholars at The College of New Jersey and other volunteers to have a successful jewelry collection and sales event there. Heart disease kills one woman every minute in this country. It kills six times more women than breast cancer. It is our #1 killer, killing more women every year than the next seven causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Heart disease has killed more women than men every year since 1984, yet it is still mistaken to be a "man's disease" by both the general public and medical professionals. Milder symptoms and recognition of a woman's risk factors are often missed opportunities in health care. While the best course of treatment for a woman with heart disease is not known, and while women suffer worse outcomes than men for heart disease procedures of all kinds, studies by Ornish and others demonstrate a woman's heart responds even better than a man's to healthy lifestyle changes. Research points to education as an effective tool to help women recognize risk factors and the gender-specific symptoms of heart disease. For this reason, the mission of the Women’s Heart Foundation has remained focused on its goals to educate women and health professionals about the unique needs of women and their heart health. Additionally, the Foundation’s goal is to advocate for the research and diagnosis of heart disease as well as that of women as caregivers.
April 22 - Untax My Heart Day in Oberlin, Ohio

Kristi Matthews from Guilford College wrote:
Hey Guys,
We are doing a celebration for the volunteer sites we are committed to. There will also be nonbonners involved as well as professor and staff who will be bringing their kids. We will be having at least 100 kids and it is going to be a lot of fun!!

Kwesi Fynn from Davidson College wrote:
We'll be working on four different sites which have an effect on Hunger and Homelessness. They are:

Mooresville Soup Kitchen - The group will be doing maintanence work for the soup kitchen which will include painting, defrosting all their freezers, bleaching the chairs, and various other maintanence type tasks.

Crisis Assistance Clothing Ministry - The group will be going through donations, helping to sort and fold clothing and other items that have been donated. It is similar to Goodwill but I don't think they operate for much of a profit. It's more like Loaves and Fishes but with clothing.

Habitat for Humanity - The group will be doing your typical Habitat build, helping to constuct a house in Cornelius.

Loaves and Fishes - The group will going around to pick up food from a food drive going on in Davidson. Then they will help sort and put away the food at the Loaves and Fishes pantry at the Ada Jenkins Center.

The groups will each be around 8-10 people. The service day will last from 9:30 to 2:45/3 except the Habitat group which will have to leave campus at around 7:30 a.m. There will be a short reflection at the end of the service to relate it to hunger and homelessness, to discuss future service in light of these hunger and homelessness issues, and to just have each person debrief and express their thoughts on the day. The goal of the service day is to increase awareness and get others to become more involved in service. The Bonners will be serving as mentors in the group to those who do not normally do service. Thus combining Bonners and regular students who do not normally or who do not regularly do service will allow the latter group to better understand what service means and what role it should play in society.

Greg Shivers from Tusculum College wrote:
Hey guys,
Tusculum will be participating on the April 22 service day. The delegation will have the opportunity to enter a place where there are more than 20 distinct tribal groups living on the same land and that is one of the first 5 majority-minority states in the U.S. (e.g., where the population of color is higher than that of whites). They will also explore the Sacred Lands of the Southwest, including the UN designated world heritage site of Chaco Canyon, nearby pueblo indigenous villages, and the National IndianYouth Leadership Project's Sacred Mountain Camp. This event is co-sponsored by Defiance's McMaster School, a unique program that involves faculty, staff, and students in meaingful research projects and trips to countries like Belize, Cambodia, Ireland, and Jamaica.

Click here to find out more and Click here to register today!

'Baghdad Burning'

I just realized, like many of you, that Saturday, March 18 was the Three Year Anniversary of the War in Iraq. At the COOL/Idealist Conference, Activist Medea Benjamin of CODEPINK spoke passionately about her resistance to the war. In the past few months, Senator Russ Feingold has been the only US leader to put forth a timetable for withdrawl of troops. In the news, President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney emphatically reiterate that our presence in Iraq is not only necessary but will be successful. In the blessing of multimedia today we find ourselves questioning the reliability of sources when it comes to our role as citizens in speaking out for change.

I have found a nameless Iraqi girl's blog about her life, politics, and struggles an insightful primary source lately. Check out her sincere thoughts as she looks back on the last three years and looks forward to change. I'll leave you with a passage from her somber post but I encourage you to read the whole thing and respond to this post with your comments about the Three Year Anniversary and how your campus continues to respond to the war.

I remember as a child, during a visit, I was playing outside with one of the neighbors children. Amal was exactly my age- we were even born in the same month, only three days apart. We were laughing at a silly joke and suddenly she turned and asked coyly, “Are you Sanafir or Shanakil?” I stood there, puzzled. ‘Sanafir’ is the Arabic word for “Smurfs” and ‘Shanakil” is the Arabic word for “Snorks”. I didn’t understand why she was asking me if I was a Smurf or a Snork. Apparently, it was an indirect way to ask whether I was Sunni (Sanafir) or Shia (Shanakil).

“What???” I asked, half smiling. She laughed and asked me whether I prayed with my hands to my sides or folded against my stomach. I shrugged, not very interested and a little bit ashamed to admit that I still didn’t really know how to pray properly, at the tender age of 10.

Later that evening, I sat at my aunt’s house and remember to ask my mother whether we were Smurfs or Snorks. She gave me the same blank look I had given Amal. “Mama- do we pray like THIS or like THIS?!” I got up and did both prayer positions. My mother’s eyes cleared and she shook her head and rolled her eyes at my aunt, “Why are you asking? Who wants to know?” I explained how Amal, our Shanakil neighbor, had asked me earlier that day. “Well tell Amal we’re not Shanakil and we’re not Sanafir- we’re Muslims- there’s no difference.”

It was years later before I learned that half the family were Sanafir, and the other half were Shanakil, but nobody cared. We didn’t sit around during family reunions or family dinners and argue Sunni Islam or Shia Islam. The family didn’t care about how this cousin prayed with his hands at his side and that one prayed with her hands folded across her stomach. Many Iraqis of my generation have that attitude. We were brought up to believe that people who discriminated in any way- positively or negatively- based on sect or ethnicity were backward, uneducated and uncivilized.

The thing most worrisome about the situation now, is that discrimination based on sect has become so commonplace. For the average educated Iraqi in Baghdad, there is still scorn for all the Sunni/Shia talk. Sadly though, people are being pushed into claiming to be this or that because political parties are promoting it with every speech and every newspaper- the whole ‘us’ / ‘them’. We read constantly about how ‘We Sunnis should unite with our Shia brothers…’ or how ‘We Shia should forgive our Sunni brothers…’ (note how us Sunni and Shia sisters don’t really fit into either equation at this point). Politicians and religious figures seem to forget at the end of the day that we’re all simply Iraqis.

Call Your Senators Before Noon Tomorrow, Thursday March 16!

Bono at the National Prayer Breakfast, February 2, 2006. Senators Rick Santorum, a Republican from Pennsylvania, and Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, have proposed an amendment to ensure America continues funding the life-saving Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.

Call 1-800-786-2663 today and ask your two Senators to support global AIDS funding.

Together, these diseases kill 6 million people a year-but we can fight back. The Global Fund works and is already saving lives around the world: 384,000 people have been placed on life-extending treatment for AIDS, 7.7 million people now have bed nets to protect pregnant women and children from malaria, and 7 million people have been reached with HIV/AIDS prevention messages.

Two Senators reaching across divides to do something like this doesn't happen too often- let's get behind them and all do OUR part now.

A Failure of Philanthropy?

From the good folks at Idealist.org:

In a provocative piece, Stanford’s Rob Reich asks whether charitable giving—historically rooted in helping the poor and disadvantaged—is now effectively helping the rich get richer. After attending the ONE Campaign workshop at the November Congress Meeting, Chrystal, a member of the Regional Networking Team, felt inspired to educate her campus to action around the crisis of global poverty. The ONE Campaign is a nationwide campaign to rally Americans around the issues of global, hunger, poverty, and AIDS.

How Chrystal Got It All Going… Working with a fellow Bonner student over Christmas break, Chrystal contacted the ONE Campaign through Abby Jansen, her Regional ONE Organizer through Bread for the World (www.bread.org/ONE) for resources. Then, Chrystal and other Bonners passed out flyers and ONE Campaign white wristbands at their Spring Convocation, urging Union students to sign the Declaration against world hunger and poverty.

Why It Was Successful… In January, Chrystal and other Bonners collected 353 signatures for the ONE Campaign in just 8 hours! Chrystal’s tips for a successful table have to do with choosing a lively event where many students will be likely to be interested in stopping by—in this case, Spring Confrimation—and choosing a theme that connects with Bonner’s Core commitments—in this case, Social Justice, International Issues, Community Building, and Civic Engagement. As Chrystal stated,

The ONE Campaign at Union definitely helped
community building on campus. There aren’t many people outside of the
Bonner Program here that get involved in things…so it was great to see so many
people taking part in something so important when they didn’t have to.

Chrystal also pointed out that you shouldn't be afraid to start small:

…An information table is a great way to
start the ONE Campaign on your campus just to warm the campus up to the topic
and see how many people would be interested in getting involved…then you can
move toward a guest speaker or something like that.

How to Continue the Energy on Campus… In Chrystal’s case she hopes the campus will continue the valuable education they’ve begun through the ONE Campaign by combining their next anti-poverty advocacy effort with an activity such as the Oxfam Hunger Banquet. You can host your own ONE Campaign table just like Chrystal or mobilize your campus to action, building community around another social justice issue! Follow Chrystal’s strategy in this article or contact her for more information at cpridemore@unionky.edu.
